City Breaks Ground on $5M Lyons Memorial Center Upgrade
The John P. Lyons Memorial Center is about to undergo a $5 million renovation that will bring the East Riverside recreational and community space “back to a pre-Katrina state,” according to Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s office.
The center at 624 Louisiana Ave. will receive a new roof, gym and dance floors, theater accommodations, a computer room and an HVAC system, among other improvements.
Ryan Gootee General Contractors is expected to complete the renovation next spring. Wayne Troyer Architects designed the project.
A combination of Federal Emergency Management Agency funding and city bonds will pay for most of the renovation. Corporate contributions include $115,000 from Chevron for a dance space and $125,000 from the National Football League for the computer room.
